Batting Pricing & Prepping Your Quilt

  • If you are providing your own batting, make sure that it is at least 3 inches wider in all sides; so +6 inches to the quilt top height and width.

Backing needs to be at least 4 inches wider in all sides; so +8 inches to the quilt top height and width.

Make sure to square your Backing! A square back (and a square quilt top) will help ensure that the quilt can be loaded well on to the longarm machine.

  • Your quilt top and backing are rolled onto bars (like wrapping paper) during the longarming process.

Squaring the top and the backing will help the fabric roll onto the bars evenly, helping produce better final results.

So give your quilt top and backing some love and square it up :)

  • If your quilt is directional, mark the top with a piece of painter's tape or a safety pin and a note. If your back has a top, do the same thing.

This will help your quilt top and quilt back match up the way you want them to.

  • Prepping the back of your top is important. Bulky seams or seams that have not been ironed down can cause issues with the machine.

Make sure to trim any loose threads, there is a chance you will be able to see them through the top!

  • If you’re mailing in your quilts, make sure to first package your quilt in plastic. Some people use a plastic bag, a plastic mailer, or even plastic wrap.

Even though we don’t get much weather here in So Cal, you never know what your package might be sitting next to while being transported. The box next to it might have liquids, and if damaged, can leak. Dun DuN DUNNNNNN [cue scary movie scream]

  • I carry Quilter‘s Dream batting; they are a well trust brand used by many longarmers. This batting is often not found in general big box stores.

I carry Queen Size rolls, 93”wide.

I also carry a limited quantity of 80/20 king size batting in a bag.

    Quilter’s Dream Bamboo

Bamboo is a luxurious blend of velvety Bamboo, Tussah silk, strong Tencel® and soft stable Cotton. Dream Bamboo’s natural environmentally friendly fibers are blended, carded, crosslapped and finely needle punched to bring you unparalleled softness, strength, warmth and breathability.

Quilter’s Dream considers the Bamboo batting their most elegant quilting batting; it has a silky soft drape, minimal shrinkage, and is a great option for warmer climates.

    Quilters Dream 80/20

80/20 is a very nice batting that is a blend of 80% high grade long staple USA cotton fiber paired with 20% fine denier poly microfiber. The blend of the two create a batting that has a nice loft, drapes beautifully, breaths well, reduces shrinkage, and is resistant to creases and wrinkles.

80/20 is a wonderful all around choice for gifting or for yourself.

  • Most of the batting I stock is on a 93” roll. I will use only what is needed for your quilt (smallest side + a 6” margin) and charge per inch.

For example, if your quilt is 6o” x 80”, I would cut 66” and charge the linear inch price multiplied by 66”.

Quilters Dream Bamboo on 93” roll - $0.45 per linear inch.

Quilters Dream 80/20 on 93” roll - $0.39 per linear inch.

Quilters Dream 82/20 King Size (122 x 120) package - $45.00 per package. Inventory is limited. I’ll reach out if I don’t have any on hand.

  • Quilter’s Dream is a great quality batting not sold in big box stores like JoAnn or Michael’s and is trusted by many longarmers. It provides consistently good results that help give a nice final product.

If you’re mailing your quilt, it saves you from having to pay to ship the batting to me!

And let’s be real. It’s easy and we all need one less thing to do.
